California earthquake should be Golden State’s wake-up call to prepare

Another earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California Thursday making it the second rock-shocker in about a month.

If this isn’t a wake-up call to Californians to prepare for a future, devastating quake, then there will be no more.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the most recent temblor weighed in at a 5.9 magnitude.

Almost a month earlier on Jan. 9 a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck the region and caused more than $40 million in damage with one serious injury—a woman who broke her hip.

Don’t be fooled, this was no aftershock, Steve Walter, a seismologist at the USGS in Menlo Park, Calif., told the Mercury News.

The News also reported that historic research shows California is at danger for massive earthquakes of up to 9.0 magnitude.

Granted this—historically—happens every 300 to 400 years.

Records, however, tracing back to 1769 show no earthquake reaching 9.0, but almost: In 1812, two 7.0-magnitude quakes rocked Santa Barbara and Wrightwood, Calif. Then in 1838, another 7.0 quake hit San Francisco. In 1868, a 7.0 magnitude struck Hayward fault. In 1872, a 7.6 hit Owens Valley, Calif. In 1899, a 7.0 west of Eureka, Calif. In 1906, the great 8.25-magnitude earthquake struck San Francisco. In 1922, a 7.3 hit west of Eureka. In 1923, a 7.2 in Cape Mendocino, Calif. In 1933, a 7.0 in the Colorado River delta. In 1940, a 7.1 in Imperial Valley, Calif. In 1952, a 7.7 in Kern County, Calif. In 1980, a 7.2 west of Eureka, Calif. In 1989, a 7.1 in Loma Prieta, Calif. In 1991, a 7.1 west of Crescent City, Calif. In 1992, a 7.2 in Cape Mendocino, Calif., and a 7.3 in Landers, Calif. In 1999, a 7.1 in Hector Mine, Calif. Then on Jan. 9, a 6.5 and now a 5.9.

If history is to repeat itself, the residents of California would be wise to listen.

Such a high magnitude quake as 7.0 or higher could cause severe destruction and death to a city. Haiti is a prime example.

Preparing and planning for quakes is no doubt part of the culture in California emergency management and government, but ordinary civilians must also take action by developing a Go Bag of essential supplies and being able to survive for at least 72 hours without help.

We’ve already seen the devastation in Haiti—the U.S. and the state of California cannot experience such a disarray.

  1. good article….Californians are always sleeping in their yuppie world and would be hard pressed to get through a period of no services. As this article says…’wake up’…..thank you for the reminder we all need.

  2. Your enthusiasm for a 9+ may be misplaced.

Just a few hours earlier, I had predicted – “Oregon (6+) – San Francisco (5+)” and “El Salvador (6+) – Cuba (6+) – Virgin Islands (4+) – Venezuela (6+)” under 1/10 – 16/10. under 1/10 – 16/10. Then, “One day after 6.5 Northern California earthquake, shaky residents sweep up” (By Ari B. Bloomekatz and Garrett Therolf; latimes.com, 1/10/10).
Then, with condolences, within 150 miles of Cuba, “Haiti earthquake by the numbers” (By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS; seattlepi.com, 1/26/10).

“A. … Also from ExxonMobil’s global warming, the West Coast of the Americas will act like a tectonic clapper in a bell ringing between Asia and Europe – the maximum resonance will occur between the Philippines and Christmas Island (Australia). … B. Including the odd chance of JJBAL Fireballs with each prediction, with included statistics, the specifics of the Giulaino – Gansu Model (1/31 – 2/6/10) of extreme earthquake warnings among tectonic energy lines with individual predictions for regions (magnitude in Richters) are: 1. WRECK Model (1/31 – 2/6/10): a. Southern Alaska (5+) – Oregon (5+) – Baja (5+) – Central East Pacific Rise (6+) – Easter Island (6+) – West Chile Rise (5+), and b. Yukon (5+) – Baffin Bay (5+) – Reykjanes Ridge (5+) – Norwegian Sea (5+) – Novaya Zemlya (5+); 2. Malawi (5+) – Kenya (5+) – Yemen (5+) – Pakistan (5+); 3. Iran (5+) – Israel (4+) – Isle of Rhodes (5+) – Crete (5+) – Tyrrhenian Sea (6+) – Pyrenees (3+); and 4. Indian Ocean Triple Junction Point (6+) – Indonesia (8+) – PNG (7+) – Guam (6+) – Marianas (7+)” (“GBRWE 1/31 – 2/6/10′’s Extreme Planetary Warnings for Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Solar/Terrestrial Flares from Human Activities”; Robert Rhodes, Supplemental; GBRWE 1/31 – 2/6/10, 1/30/10).

  3. [...] California seism should be Golden State's wake-up call to prepare [...]

  4. How exactly are Californians supposed to prepare for a devastating quake? Other than suggesting that they pack a “go bag” your article was completely worthless.

  5. Danna – Your opinion is appreciated. Some earthquake tips include those from FEMA found here: http://www.fema.gov/hazard/earthquake/ and a preparedness podcast found here: http://theklaxon.com/earthquakes/3661. We hope this helps. Any other questions, comments or concerns, please let us know.

  8. Has anybody given any thought to the possibility of an earthquake on the New Madrid fault? Damage from such a quake in this area could be far worse than for the same intensity of quake in California, because many of the structures in this part of the country have not been built to be earthquake resistant. Damage could also be far more widespread due to differences in the geological makeup of the land east of the Rockies. The New Madrid quakes in 1811 and 1812 were felt strongly enough on the East Coast to move furniture in Washington DC and ring church bells in Boston.

    Something to think about.

  9. Due to global warming, the following quake makes 1 correct prediction in this blog for both region and strength out of 23 (4.3%) that each has the actual odds of 1/23 times 1/23 from random chance. This quake is well within the 2-week model, the 4.5 Richter minimum, and the West Chile Rise region predicted under 1/31 – 2/6/10. The good people with bad web maps at the USGS reported – Magnitude Richters … Date … Region: “4.9 … 2010/02/11 08:22:57 …  WEST CHILE RISE” (earthquake.usgs.gov). Thus, 4.3% exists in this blog and some of my other correct predictions exist in other blogs. However still typical, “So far it has proved impossible to predict earthquakes in any meaningful way—that is, of a given magnitude, at a given place, on a given day. That is because of the complexity of the problem and the lack of information …  Anyone who says they can predict such things precisely and repeatedly is a charlatan or a crank” (“All shook up”; From Economist.com; economist.com, 6/26/09).  I did miss the 3.8 hitting Illinois, but, it was part of the building catastrophic tectonic energy still being bottlenecked and released with predictions designed for 1/24 – 30/10.

  10. You can see the patterns. I have watched the quake sheet for @ 10 yrs every day. The 6.5 quake has shifted the quakes somewhat. they have moved more inland in S. America. Another indicator are the animals. Remember the Sea Lions that left San Fran. 44 days before the quake there. I have google alerts for marine life to see if there are any issues with them. Dolphins and whales also have problems right before quakes.
Try this. If there are 4s or 5s either at the southern tip of S.America, draw a line all the way to Greece. there will be a quake of at least 5 to 6 somewhere on the line in 24 to 48 hrs. Do the same for 5s from Indonesia to about the Philipines. Draw a 45 Deg. angle line toward the U.S. there will be a significant quake there. Right now in the past week there has been the quake on the Texas panhandle, Ill. N.E. of Maine and a couple in Tenn. Kentucky.

  12. Due to global warming, the following quake makes 2 correct predictions in this blog for both region and strength out of 23 (8.7%) that each has the actual odds of 1/23 (region) times 1/23 (intensity) from random chance. This quake is well within the 2-week model, the 4.5 Richter minimum, and the Iran region predicted under 1/31 – 2/6/10. The good people with bad web maps at the USGS reported – Magnitude Richters … Date … Region: “ 4.6 … 2010/02/11 … WESTERN IRAN” (earthquake.usgs.gov).

However, “’CRISIS OF CONFIDENCE’ IN THE IPCC: Inhofe Decries Creation of Obama’s New Global Warming Bureaucracy, Seeks Accountability … Utah Legislature formally questions global warming … NOAA’s Ministry Of Propaganda: ‘Why must we fund one-stop shopping for climate charlatans?’ … You have been warned! 13. Due to global warming, the following quake makes 3 correct predictions in this blog for both region and strength out of 23 (13.0%) that each has the actual odds of 1/23 (region) times 1/23 (intensity) from random chance. This quake is well within the 2-week model, the 4.5 Richter minimum, and the Iran region predicted under 1/31 – 2/6/10. The good people with bad web maps at the USGS reported – Magnitude Richters … Date … Region: “5.2 … 2010/02/11… CRETE, GREECE” (earthquake.usgs.gov).

Including fireballs and solar flares in the planetary ecosystem, global warming filth exports from the ExxonMobils obviously involves more than LABI Limbaugh’s Roy ‘R-rage’ Spencer and his dippy clouds. However, predicting only an ExxonMobil paycheck, “Brilliant: ‘Vagina Monologues’ Creator Tells Palin to Look at ‘Earthquakes and Tsunamis’ for Global Warming Proof” (By Jeff “corporate horror & mentally” Poor; NewsBusters, a tentacle of the Media Research Center, one of LABI Limbaugh’s neuticles of legal international and domestic terrorism through environmental racism and other healthcare abuse; newsbusters.org, 2/9/10). So much time, so many lies. “I posted a story from CBS News: Quake n’ Bake: Global Warming Causes More Energetic Earthquakes? … total lack of verifiable science associated with it. I posted some graphs of USGS data showing that the opposite was true … Jeff Poor of the Business & Media Institute asked CBS News and AP about it in the story he filed … Accurate science reporting … to “global warming” … is pure incompetence on the part of CBS” (“CBS News sinks to new low; publishes crackpot global warming story, attributes it to Associated Press, kills it with no retraction”; written, scientific, and editorial abuse by Anthony “20-watt dim bulb” Watts, Extremist America’s only “genius” from Newstalk1290; wattsupwiththat.com, 6/19/08).

  14. Because ExxonMobils’ henchmen can’t spell fool without “U”-

“Algore has a blog, folks. (laughing) … He has made a statement, and it is without any foot in reality.  He is using the media, who is using faulty science … I’m talking about the average, ordinary duped citizen … they have been the biggest dupes in modern history … been played for the biggest suckers to come down the pike in a long time, and they bought it hook, line, and sinker … presented to them almost as a religion. … have angrily ridiculed and lambasted their fellow man who did not fall for the scam.  We were called “deniers,” in an effort to tie us to Holocaust deniers. … As a person whose career has existed on the cutting edge of societal evolution… I am that someone to once again get out ahead of the curve … total credibility on this issue … to allow otherwise critically thinking human beings with a path back to reality. … we must welcome them back and reeducate them that progress is good and has not hurt anything. … Stop contributing to any group that still participates in the fraud known as manmade global warming.  Do not read anything written by any “scientist” who tells you there is man-made.  Demand, in writing, that schools cease and desist from advancing the agenda of environmentalist wackos.  Get it out of the textbooks.  Tell you your kids if any teacher or professor perpetuates this fraud and hoax that there is man-made global warming, that they are not to believe one syllable of it.  … Obama helping people, which is screwing them … there has been no global warming, man-made or otherwise” (“The Limbaugh Peace Initiative: Amnesty for the Duped Warmers”; the old, ugly and evil Rush “LABI” Limbaugh with Hannity/Noory extremist Republican and Christian outlets for legally killing thy neighbors, plagiarism, and stealing their stuff – baby monitor for Planet-Star Wormwoody Jenkins from a 80 cat feces-filled mansion – pro-life as any other Missouri mule who screws anything non-female into the ground like the US military – Toyota gas pedal template of mass murder, toxic Chinese drywall seller, trying to harvest more Americans than ExxonMobil – aka Dr. “Jeff ‘Gannon’ Christie”; rushlimbaugh.com; 2/15/10).

  15. An Earth-quake causes heavy loss. Experts call for taking adequate precautions to minimize losses. Alarmed by the recurrence of quakes during recent years, should be taken as a signal for a major earthquake.

  16. It does not have to be a 9.0 to cause serious damage. If you are a person with Rh Negative blood who lives in an earthquake prone area, please become a member of the Rh Negative Registry. Rh Negative Blood types are always in a shortage and we are literally dependant on each other in times of crisis. Almost 100% of the population can receive O- blood the universal donor type, yet only 7% of the population make it. Whenever we use more of a resource than can be produced, it leads to trouble. You can see the eartquake activity up to the hour online at the usgs.gov

  17. Good information in this article. Thanks for the write up.

  18. Just wanted to say… great stuff! Appreciate your blog! – Charly

  19. Great post. You’ll have to follow-up with a conclusion. Keep up the great work!

  20. Good read. You’ll have to follow-up with a conclusion. Keep up the excellent job!

  21. Good read. You’ll have to follow-up with a part 2. Keep up the good posts!

  22. The difference between a 7 and a 9 is a 1000 times increase in energy. So none of the historic earthquakes “almost” reached a magnitude of 9.

    Still a good article though.
