Didn't anybody bother to tell all these folks they don't NEED to train and prepare normal citizens to be self sufficient in the event of a man made or natural disaster? Why train your local population, and make the best use of your available resources in the best interest of your community? Oh man, they must be crazy rednecks! After all, in the event of a real emergency, it's already been proven they can ALWAYS rely on the federal government to come to their prompt rescue! Don't they remember the federal governments galant actions during Katrina? How crazy they must be to feel they need to be as prepared as possible in the event something of that scale happens again. And all done safely under the direct supervision of local law enforcement to boot! How terrifying!

This is a concern. Boosier is near Shreveport, separated by the Red River. Boosier's black population is 25%.

The sheriff should be recalled, but he may feel he has just enough local support to build this "organization".

The sheriff knows he will receive some criticism, and some are trying to laugh it off as old white men in their 50's, but that doesn't mean it will stay like that.

It is a militia, and people should be concerned that Boosier is next to a military base!

Members of the military base in Boosier who may support this idea--privately, and younger recruits could come from the base and they will have access to weapons.

Right now, this is a building stage for exodus, and if the sheriff can pull this off, it may be a template for other like-minded individuals who pitch the militia concept in other communities similar to Boosier.

Bossier City is the location of Barksdale Air Force Base, home of the 2nd Bomb Wing, 8th Air Force, and 917th Wing. It was established February 2, 1933 and is one of the area's largest employers. Barksdale encompasses 22,000 acres (89 km²) and hosts the majority of the B-52 Stratofortresses used by the United States Air Force.

I didn't see anyone in the room other than "white guys", where is the representation from the other parts of the Parish that would also be affected by this catastrophic situation? What percent of the Bossier Parish population is black?

Jim Butler #26, "Forget about obama pouring billions of borrowed money into the pockets of greedy, rich traitor bankers" - You do realize that it wasn't Obama that bailed out Wall Street but rather Bush right? The bank bailout took place in October of 2008, Obama was elected in November of 2008 and sworn in January 20, 2009. More importantly, if the bailout and the "stimulus" hadn't happened most economists agree we would be in a 2nd depression. FYI: The State of Louisiana has received $276 Million in Stimulus Contract Awards, $2.2 BILLION in Stimulous Grant Awards, and $26 Million in loans saving or creating over 11,000 jobs in Louisiana to date. Bossier Parish itself has been the beneficiary of total of $11.7 Million in grants from stimulus funds. As those funds get spent, more jobs will be created, and service maintained. FACTS MATTER MY FRIEND.

So, according to you, your fear is that Californians... AMERICANS, after a major disaster will be in need and you must protect yourself from them? THIS is what is wrong with this country. You have no issue with MY tax money paying for things YOU want (in this case guns) but god forbid it works the other way around. You have yours and everyone else can just go to hell. Forget the fact that CALIFORNIA went to the aid of New Orleans, (including yours truly) without thinking about anything else then helping our fellow man. That's some great principles you run on their Mr. Butler, Greed surrounded by ignorance.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State

Where's the problem?

Sounds like a good idea to me. Local citizens with enough brain power to understand the federal government will protect only its own – and that people in out of the way places – like New Orleans – will have to fend for themselves in the case of an overwhelming disaster. Hell, the sheriff deserves a medal and kudos for letting go of typical cop mentality that cops are the only ones who should have the ability to defend themselves.

The last line in that article – “As the old adage goes, leave the work to the professionals” is deeply offensive. They are the words of a weak, cowardly sheep – too pathetic to take care of itself. This is the kind of weak zero that waits pitifully for someone else to come and rescue it instead of standing up, being an adult human being, and fending for itself. Rescue is the work of professionals – and pathetic whiny sheep should never do the work of professionals – even to save itself. Despicable coward, the author Joshua wilwohl.

And if our tax dollars are being spent on armament to be used by law-abiding, honest tax payers – then, please, tell me where to sign up. There’s a new tactical shotgun I’ve been eying and I wouldn’t be above asking for an additional few thousand more rounds each of 5.56 and .45ACP, along with a couple cases each of 00-buck and slugs for the new shotgun! Forget about obama pouring billions of borrowed money into the pockets of greedy, rich traitor bankers – this is real economic stimulus – and solid preparation for real homeland security (local style, that is)

I had the dubious advantage of being laid off the summer of hurricane Katrina – and I watched how well the federal government responded to the disaster – and I watched how local cops killed defenseless citizens and disarmed law abiding citizens – leaving them at the tender mercy of criminals that the police were too afraid of to deal with. Watching all of this, I realized that if – when – the West Coast has its earthquake and becomes unlivable - that the masses will start their exodus out all the major cities. They will flee for the countryside and they will want food and shelter. But they won’t ask – they will take. Too bad if that shelter is your home – or that food what you were about to have for dinner. The masses will take what they want. And local and federal governments – will do nothing to stop it. I purchased my first hand gun and shotgun not long after Katrina. And Sheriff Larry Deen of Bossier Parish, Louisiana – I’m sure he saw the same governmental response I saw in the aftermath of the hurricane – and decided to get his act together to protect the citizens he is charged to protect.

So, job well done, Louisiana! What would it take to start a similar program here?
